Problem installing NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe

Damn this error

NDP1.1sp1-KB928366-X86.exe

The upgrade patch cannot be installed by the Windows Installer service because the program to be upgraded may be missing blah blah blah…….

This has been annoying me no end, and am pretty sure I am not the only one. If you don’t believe me do a Google search,

In my case however I found that .NET 1.1 Service Pack 1 was not even installed (WTH), so first I did the install to satisfy the dependency. /rant Surely Windows Update should know not to install this patch though for something that it not installed….. grrrrrr. Anyway after installing the service pack I extracted the installer (C:\Temp\dotnetfx.exe /t:c:\Temp /c) to have the netfx.MSI available and then ran the patch installer. When it asked for netfx.msi I just pointed it to the file under “c:\temp”, however it so far has only asked once out of the three times installed.

ThinkGeek :: Hal 9000 USB Memory Unit

ThinkGeek :: Hal 9000 USB Memory Unit

Who knew computers would be so advanced in the year 2001? Certainly not us… we were damn impressed with Furby and along comes HAL. HAL was created in 1992 at the HAL plant in Illinois… then had some minor “issues” during a 2001 space mission. Subsequently HAL’s memory units were removed for later examination and some of these happened to fall into our hands… or that’s what some Dave guy told us. Technology wasn’t quite as refined back then but these slim USB thumb drives can hold 1 Gig of your files and interface using USB 2.0, an engineering miracle at the time. All of HAL’s schizophrenic tendencies should be removed but we guarantee nothing. Watch your computer carefully for any erratic behavior and please leave your pod bay doors open.Product Specifications

Podcast directory goes live – ITWeb

Podcast directory goes live

A directory for South African podcasters and listeners went live this month, hosted by Internet Solutions (IS).

A podcast is a feed of audio or video files placed on the Internet for anyone to subscribe to.

The IS Podfarm serves as a catalogue of a variety of local and international podcasts, says IS product specialist Jeff Fletcher.

“As the technology catches on, more and more people want to access specific podcasts, so we have anticipated the need for a single public repository,” adds Hillel Shrock, new business development director at IS.

Podfarm links to 11 podcasts, from a ‘Moneyweb power hour’ to Rodger Goode on 5fm. The programmes vary in length, depending on their nature.

Fletcher believes the directory will help to unearth grassroots podcasters by giving them a promotional avenue.

The Podfarm is a catalogue of local and international podcasts, says IS.
“So far there have been no concentrated efforts to further the South African podcasting industry, in contrast to the enormous international growth of the phenomenon,” he notes.

IS could not put a figure to the costs of sponsoring the site, but Fletcher explains that since it is not actually hosting every podcast, the server hosting costs are negligible.

Shrock adds that most programmes can be downloaded with an ordinary PC with the suitable software and soundcard – an iPod or MP3 player is not essential.

Podcasting, which arrived in SA in mid-2004, was named word of the year by the New Oxford American Dictionary in 2005.
