Hellgate London Woes

This is just pissing me off. I have used up 500MB of precious South African bandwidth thanks to a stupid idea to patch Hellgate in-game. I did just come across this at Gamespot, which points to the Official Forums, which may help.

If you’re having problems getting the patch and an error message comes up Alt tab out, do -NOT- click on the tick. Check your tmp folder ( For those that don’t know where it is ‘Program Files/Flagship Studios/Hellgate London/tmp’ ) and simply wait. Files will start appearing within it, faster than if you were using the game.

After a while (Roughly past 60MB) most of the files will vanish, wait a minute or two and alt tab back to the game. Click on the tick and then re click on multiplayer. There will be a pause, and then it will take you into the game (Or agreement form, depending.) For those that don’t see a tmp folder, you must have downloaded a file for it to appear, if you simply can’t download the first file, create one in the mentioned category and wait like a hawk after it errors for the file to appear. It should be 2157kb large when finished, this file is the first eg: hellgate_mp_dx9_x86.exe .

I have no idea why it continues to download and then patch after it’s encountered an error, however i’m not one to look a gift horse in the mouth. Hopefully one of the FSS developers can understand why it does this and correct the proper patching system so it doesn’t error.

Regardless, hope this stops people tearing their hair out. it’s not a perfect solution, but at least it works!

Update

That did not work. A chap know asย  Infidel713 madehis own distributable patch. I have mirrored it (should be up by 23:00 GMT 2007-11-10) here

Windows Live

Apparetnly Live.Com is LIVE, i.e. no longer in beta, but what will that mean for us? Probably not much, although it is a dig at Google who even though they have deployed v2 of GMail it is still in Beta, like pretty much everything of their’s.

I signed up for Hotmail fairly recentlyย  and must say I like the familiar feel of the interface, but it is not GMail. I have not been able to put a finger on why I like GMail but it probably has a lot to do with the simplicity of their interface. My only gripe with GMail is the lack of “folders”, yes they have their labels (tags) but I am not fond of having to plow through tons of mail (I usually have 50-300 unread) to find what I am looking for, but then I suppose that is why they have the search feature ๐Ÿ™‚

The one reason that I would move is the awesome integration with the Windows Mobile platform. The fact that they give you push mail and contacts is something that makes my life much easier.

HellGate: London

Damn this game ๐Ÿ™‚

I am waiting (im)patiently for my copy to arrive to try the online, but the single player has me. I haven’t even loaded up another game in the last three days.

Now the wait for Crysis can begin ๐Ÿ˜€

My "Social Network"

Flock

I have now been using Flock for three or so weeks now and must say it feels more stable than FF and most of the plugins I use work fine (Session Manager, PDF Download, StumbleUpon and others).

The people tool bar introduced in the v1 versions is useful, but I would like to have some thing that aggregates my twitter feed something like the way Snitter.

Twitter

I have gotten so addicted to using Twitter that Facebook is not looked at all that often anymore. I have also found it to be an interesting way to keep up with news. IOL has been using it to “push” news stories straight to the user. I have not seen a better way of pushing content, some thing that has been talked about for many years now.

FaceBook

The current rage of Social Netowkring, although I am a bit frustrated using it. I have more application installed than I care for, and must have around 100 invites to others which I haven’t even looked at. Other than that I have found it useful as I found two old school friends and was able to make contact through FB.

NING

I have recently been using Ning as Sword and Laser, and it is an interesting concept as it gives anyone the ability to create their own social network. I wonder what will happen once the Open Social Framework goes live there, could be some interesting applications appearing.
